Twenty five years ago the miners strike split families, communities and friendships. Like many, my knowledge of the dispute was informed by press and television reports. I was surprised to read the BBC incorrectly edited and broadcast footage to show miners charged police lines first. In reality it was the other way, police made the first move. Genuine mistake or otherwise, public opinion is infuenced by the media. If the public can’t trust the source what alternative is there to make sense of our world?
Debating media impartiality is not the issue here, encouraging individuals to take responsibility, to challenge and question the information and the way in which it is presented, is.
Speak as you find, question the source at all times, only then can you make informed decisions.
