Q: I’ve been asked to decide between accepting a pay cut at work or face the risk of redundancy – what should I do?

A: Firstly, establish if the redundancy thing is a ‘threat’ or not. Secondly, it comes down to evaluating your alternative options: for example are you able to consider a) starting a business; b) find another job; c) suggest other ways the business can achieve cost savings (if you have identified any!) Depending on the length of time with your employer you may wish to consider the smaller pay packet. Whilst most recruiters understand a lot of people are loosing their jobs it is often said ‘it’s easier to find work when you are already in a job.’ At least you have a choice, consider your options, do the maths and ultimately it’s your ‘best-guess’ after all, none of us has a crystal ball!
